Tudor: Brand History

Founded in 1926 by Hans Wilsdorf, the visionary behind Rolex, Tudor was created to offer timepieces that delivered the robustness, reliability and precision associated with its sister brand, but at a more accessible price point. From the outset, Tudor watches benefitted from Rolex-made cases and components, establishing a reputation for durability and technical excellence.

By the 1950s and 1960s, Tudor had become recognised for its professional-grade tool watches. The brand’s Submariner models, widely adopted by elite military units—including the French Marine Nationale—cemented Tudor’s status as a maker of highly capable diving instruments. Throughout this era, Tudor blended Rolex engineering with its own distinctive design language, producing watches that are now prized by collectors.

After a period of quieter presence in the late 20th century, Tudor underwent a major revival in 2012, reasserting itself with a renewed focus on vintage-inspired aesthetics, exceptional finishing and modern reliability. Collections such as the Black Bay, Pelagos, Ranger and Heritage Chrono propelled the brand to global prominence, celebrated for combining nostalgic styling with contemporary performance.

The introduction of Tudor Manufacture Calibres in 2015 marked a new chapter of technical independence, offering COSC-certified movements with impressive power reserves and robust construction. Today, Tudor stands as one of the most respected names in luxury horology, admired for its balance of heritage, innovation and purposeful design.
