Omega: Brand History
Founded in 1848 in La Chaux-de-Fonds by Louis Brandt, Omega began as a small workshop assembling precision pocket watches. By the late 19th century, the company had earned a reputation for exceptional accuracy, culminating in the launch of the revolutionary Omega calibre in 1894—a movement so advanced and reliable that it gave the brand its name. Omega rapidly became a benchmark of Swiss watchmaking excellence.
Throughout the 20th century, Omega established itself as a leader in precision timing. It became the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games in 1932, a partnership that continues to this day, reinforcing the brand’s association with technical mastery and sporting achievement.
Omega’s most iconic milestone came in 1969, when the Speedmaster Professional became the first watch worn on the Moon, part of NASA’s Apollo 11 mission. This achievement cemented Omega’s place in horological history and elevated its status among collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
The brand’s expertise in robust, high-performance timekeeping also shaped the creation of its celebrated diving lines. The Seamaster, introduced in 1948, evolved into a cornerstone of Omega’s portfolio, famously worn by James Bond since 1995. Likewise, the Constellation and De Ville collections continue to exemplify Omega’s blend of elegance, innovation and mechanical refinement.
In recent years, Omega has pushed the boundaries of technical advancement with Co-Axial escapements, Master Chronometer certification and industry-leading anti-magnetic movements, solidifying its reputation as one of the most innovative and respected luxury watchmakers in the world.
