The Watch

This vintage Breitling Navitimer from 1968 is a well-worn yet attractive example of an iconic pilot’s chronograph, with a gold-plated case and a striking black dial. Renowned for its intricate slide rule bezel and powered by the dependable Venus 178 manual wind chronograph movement this model was originally designed for aviation professionals. The combination of the chronograph's timing function and the logarithmic scales allowed pilots to perform relevant calculations such as rate of fuel consumption or conversion from imperial to metric units. The rich, gloss black dial features contrasting 'reverse Panda' sub-dials and beautiful gold text, perfectly co-ordinating with the outer slide rule's warm ivory and three little splashes of red.

Dimensions: 41mm wide, 13.5mm thick, 47mm lug-to-lug.

The Watchmaker

Founded in 1884, Breitling has come to be closely associated with aviation. The Navitimer, became publicly available in 1954, having been commissioned by Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) in 1952. It would go on to become one of the most recognisable pilot’s watches ever produced, worn not only by pilots by celebrities such as jazz musician Miles Davis and Formula 1 champions Jim Clark, Graham Hill, and Jo Siffert.

Authenticity, Condition, and Guarantees

All items have been inspected for authenticity, and are guaranteed as such. As this is a pre-owned watch, signs of wear consistent with age and previous use should be expected. Buyers of watches should also recognise that maintenance and treatment appropriate to the watch in question are required to protect time-keeping and condition. There is a 6 month function guarantee for watches costing £1000 or more. Water resistance is not guaranteed; even watches originally waterproof may not be so, unless recently sealed and pressure-tested.
