Garrard: Brand History

Founded in 1735 by George Wicks, Garrard is recognised as the oldest jewellery house in the world and became internationally renowned for its craftsmanship, precious metals expertise and royal patronage. Appointed the first official Crown Jeweller of the United Kingdom in 1843, Garrard was entrusted with the creation, care and resetting of many of Britain’s most significant royal jewels, including the Imperial State Crown and numerous coronation pieces.

While Garrard is celebrated primarily for high jewellery and bespoke royal commissions, the house has a long-standing tradition of producing fine timepieces. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Garrard retailed distinguished pocket watches and early wristwatches, often created in collaboration with respected Swiss manufacturers. These timepieces were typically cased in precious metals and designed to complement the maison’s refined jewellery aesthetic.

By the mid-20th century, Garrard-branded watches became a discreet symbol of British elegance, combining Swiss mechanical movements with precious-metal cases, gemstone detailing or minimalist dress-watch styling. Many of these vintage pieces were produced in limited quantities, contributing to their rarity and desirability among collectors today.

In the modern era, Garrard continues to embody the values that have defined the house for nearly three centuries: exceptional craftsmanship, meticulous attention to detail and a deep heritage rooted in British luxury. Although its contemporary focus is centred on fine jewellery, vintage Garrard watches remain sought after for their understated sophistication, precious materials and distinguished provenance.
